The Finch was re-activated in July of 1951 as a US Coast Guard Destroyer Escort and recommissioned 8/24/1951 under command of Commander G. R. Boyce, Jr., USCG with a crew of only 108 men.
Lacking all of her crew, the ship remained moored until 8/31/1951 when additional personnel arrived bring the crew up to 121 men. The Finch remained in various eastern ports for upgrades and repairs until 1/31/1952 when Commander Bainbridge B. Leland took command.
The Finch remained on the East Coast until 2/16/1952 when it sailed from Yorktown, Virginia enroute to San Francisco via the Panama Canal.
During the years from 4/23/1952 through 4/23/1954, the Finch manned seven ocean stations and visited sixteen ports in the pacific ocean and participated in three training missions.

The Finch entered drydock at Mare Island and was decommissioned and returned to the US Navy on 4/23/1954.
